England Trophies at Plymouth 40 lap Feature Sunday
2003 Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series champ Denny England of Warsaw, Indiana took home the big trophy from Plymouth Speedway Sunday evening after another awesome HOSS feature event. The G & K Well Drilling, Pro-Strip, Tri Star Trucking, Vortex Chassis with the Hogue power took over the lead on lap 28 from early leader Doug Berryman and held off the Ohio challenger by less than a second in a 40-lap feature which saw no caution flags.
The weather was absolutely perfect for racing Sunday afternoon and 24 pavement kings with wings made the trip to Plymouth for the first of three HOSS events here in 2004. Fans lined up early to get in for what they knew was going to be a great day of racing. In addition to the sprint cars, the weekly divisions at Plymouth put on a fabulous show and the Plymouth fans love to support this speedway.
Qualifying action saw Jeff Bloom set the Indy RV Center fast time with a 11.715 second mark, just two thousandths ahead of the proclaimed Buckeye Bandit Joe Rebman at 11.717. In all, the top ten time were within a half second of Bloom and everyone knew the stage was set for great racing.
Heat race action saw number 11Tom Patterson of Argos hold off Doug Berryman’s 1R to win the first heat. The crowd loudly voiced their approval of the local drivers accomplishment. The second heat win went to Sondi Eden in the Batts 6 over Ron Koehler and his familiar black 10. The third heat race victory was all Rick Baker after the front row of Jerry Caryer and Chris Jagger connected on the first lap and were unable to restart.
B-main action saw Danny Williams, jr. pull away in Mike Blake’s orange 81 for win and get his second row starting position in the A main.
The feature rolled off at the crack of dusk and the fans cheered wildly on the wave lap. The green flag flew and pole-sitter Berryman opened a gap over the field in the first few laps. The pace was pandemonium with twenty cars circling the 3/8 mile track every twelve seconds! The crowd was whipped into weariness by the cars flashing by the packed grandstands. The announcer barely could be heard over the roar of the engines blasting into turn one. England closed to the tail of Berryman’s car and measured the talented leader lap after lap until traffic yielded the place to pull the pass for the lead and the win. Berryman would come home second ahead of teammate bandit Joe Rebman. England’s victory lane comments were that he wasn’t sure that he could catch the yellow 1R, but traffic certainly helped today.
The Julian Construction Hard Charger trophy went to #45 Brian Lay. The Suspension Spring Specialist awards went to #10 Ron Koehler and #37 Hank Lower. The Weld Racing award went to #9 Michael Tarlton.
